Area Guide

Alpine Plants of the World

Discover rare international treasures, including the ethereal Himalayan Blue Poppy and the legendary Edelweiss. This section is dedicated to the cultivation of exotic alpine flora, offering a unique opportunity to witness species seldom seen outside their native high-altitude habitats.

Mountain Flower Area

Representing the diverse flora of Nagano Prefecture between altitudes of 700m and 2,000m, this area showcases the seasonal shifts of the Japanese highlands. Visitors can enjoy vibrant displays of Daylilies in July, followed by the delicate blooms of Spiraea in August.

Hakuba Mountain Range Alpine Area

This meticulously recreated landscape mirrors the natural plant communities of the Hakuba Mountain Range. By grouping species according to their specific altitudes and environments, we allow visitors to observe these plants as they truly exist in the wild. The trail offers a rewarding hiking experience, and the summit—marked with a “Hakuba Goryu-dake” sign—is a favorite spot for commemorative photos.

Alpine Flower Area

Specializing in species found at high elevations of around 2,500m, this area features carefully cultivated alpine plants from Nagano’s most rugged peaks. A primary highlight is the spectacular cluster of approximately 30,000 Dicentra peregrina, renowned for their striking form and exceptionally long flowering season.

Grassland Flower Area

Inspired by the lush meadows found at the foothills of the Hakuba mountains, this area celebrates the rustic beauty of the highland plains. From June to July, the landscape comes alive with impressive clusters of Iris ensata and the vibrant pink hues of Epilobium angustifolium (Fireweed).

Alps Daira Nature Trail

Bordering the highest point of the botanical garden, this trail invites you to immerse yourself in untouched natural scenery. Whether you are taking in the sweeping views from the Jizo-no-Kashira cairn viewpoint or wandering through the fiery colors of the autumn foliage, this walk highlights the raw, seasonal majesty of the Alps.
